The Presence of the Headlands

The Headlands is a place rich in history, with unfathomable amounts of people who have walked over its land for many, many years.  Whenever I am at the Headlands, I can’t help but sense the immense presence of those who were once there.  I am also becoming a part of that history and maybe someone, someday will be aware of my own existence.

Each of these images includes a dress, which can be seen more as a representation of a person’s past, rather than just a piece of cloth.  The garment appears to be floating, hovering, haunting and/or levitating depending on the environment it is in.  It relates to the environment by inventing a narrative the viewer can interpret.

Each of the dresses used was chosen because I can attach a specific memory to it.  Remembering an event or place that is triggered by a specific object is something that greatly interests me. The act of remembering is unique in that it brings the past into the present through the subconscious.  The notion of memory is reiterated throughout the work.

This series is shot using black and white film.  I chose to shoot film and print digitally to further emphasize the marriage of past and present. The images have a distinct connection with memory and it is my hope that the viewer can understand this through visual cues.

Tunnel to the Headlands

As my summer photo intensive comes to a close, this photo of the tunnel going into the Headlands is a pretty good summation of my experience this summer:  blurringly fast!  I have had such a wonderful time exploring the land and structures of the Headlands and I am thankful for all of the inspiration the place holds for me.

More Headlands Presences

As the end to this project is in sight, I can't help but wish I had more time.  I know I can always go back and shoot more, but the immense amount of shooting in a short amount of time has really forced me to make decisions and I feel like after next week, the project won't be the same if I try to go back and add to the series.  It will be a different idea all together.  I have one more day of shooting this series and then I plan to edit down to 6-8 images.  Feel free to let me know which ones you think I should use!  I know several of them are similar, so I need some advice on which ones are most successful.

A New Twist

I tried some new ways of shooting this past week to make the garment more reminiscent of physical presence.  I think it works and am happy with the results so far.  I do need to do some more editing down.  I'm happy I've gotten down to 8 images so far, but definitely need to edit down to just one image per garment, which is going to be tough!  Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
